Arthur's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, Henry, Samuel, Joseph, Edwin, William, Alice and Ann.  He was the youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 52 in February 1915 in Prestwich.  He was buried on February 9th, 1915 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).²
