Edwin was born in 1858 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on April 25th, 1858 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Edwin's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, Henry, Samuel, Joseph, William, Arthur, Alice and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 5 in April 1863 in Prestwich.  He was buried on May 2nd, 1863 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).3
