Joseph was born in 1850 in Prestwich and his baptism took place there on August 4th, 1850.1 2  Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, Henry, Samuel, Edwin, William, Arthur, Alice and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
