Alice's father was William Mather and her mother was Alice Ashton. She had eight brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, Henry, Samuel, Joseph, Edwin, William, Arthur and Ann.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 79 in July 1932 in Manchester.²
