William's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, Henry, Samuel, Joseph, Edwin, Arthur, Alice and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 13 in June 1874 in Prestwich.  He was buried on June 29th, 1874 in Prestwich.²
