Henry was born in 1845 in Prestwich.1  Henry's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, Samuel, Joseph, Edwin, William, Arthur, Alice and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
