Thomas was born in November 1840 in Levenshulme.1  Thomas' father was William Mather and his mother was Mary A Rowland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Stephen, Ephriam, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
