Sarah was born in 1837 in Levenshulme.1  Sarah's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary A Rowland. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Stephen, Ephriam, Thomas, Ann, Harriet and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
