Ephriam was born on July 29th, 1834 in Levenshulme and his baptism took place there on January 7th, 1835.1 2  Ephriam's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary A Rowland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Stephen, Thomas, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
