Joseph was born in 1828 in Levenshulme.1  Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary A Rowland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Stephen, Ephriam, Thomas, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
