Stephen was born in 1832 in Levenshulme.1  Stephen's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary A Rowland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Ephriam, Thomas, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
