John was born in 1826 in Levenshulme.1  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary A Rowland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Joseph, Stephen, Ephriam, Thomas, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
