Ann was born in 1826 in Levenshulme.1  Ann's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary A Rowland. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Stephen, Ephriam, Thomas, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
