Sarah was born in 1827 in Manchester and her baptism took place at Manchester Cathedral.  Sarah's father was Auguste Arnold and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Ashton. She had a brother named Gus.  She was the older of the two known children.
