William was born in June 1845 in Stockport and his baptism took place there on September 21st, 1845.1  William's father was Isaac Mathers and his mother was Esther Kershaw.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ann Williams. He had three brothers named Samuel, James and Robert. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
