Samuel was born in December 1839 in Stockport and his baptism took place there on April 7th, 1844.1 2  Samuel's father was Isaac Mathers and his mother was Esther Kershaw.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ann Williams. He had three brothers named William, James and Robert. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
