Thomas was born in 1826 in Manchester and his baptism took place on February 12th, 1826 at Manchester Cathedral.1  Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Maria Yates.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Matther and Sarah Hall. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Isaac, Sarah, Elizabeth and Maria.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 28 in March 1854 in Manchester.2
