William was born in 1829 in Manchester and his baptism took place on December 6th, 1829 at Manchester Cathedral.1  William's father was James Mather and his mother was Maria Yates.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Matther and Sarah Hall. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Isaac, Sarah, Elizabeth and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the six children.

‌William and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on April 10th, 1852 in Manchester.2   They had two sons and a daughter, named James, George and Maria.
