Mary was born in December 1847 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Ellen Croft.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Jane (Jenny) Fish. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Jane and Hannah.  She was the second youngest of the five known children.
