Robert's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Willoughby Mather and Dinah Parker. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Martha.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died at 6 months old in June 1855 in Bolton.¹
