Martha's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Martha Garey.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, Henry, Sarah, Betsy, Mary and Margaret.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
