Mary's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Martha Garey.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, Henry, Sarah, Betsy, Martha and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
