Mary was born in June 1875 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Martha Garey.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, Henry, Sarah, Betsy, Martha and Margaret.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
