William was born in December 1858 in Salford.1  William's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Martha Garey.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Henry, Sarah, Betsy, Martha, Mary and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
