  (*) Sarah's 1861 census entry was inserterd between parents and siblings, so although birth shown as "do", so she may be born at Pendleton like her father or Salford like her mother.

Sarah's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Martha Garey. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, Henry, Betsy, Martha, Mary and Margaret. She was the oldest of the eight children.
