Selina was born in 1855 in Salford.¹ Selina's father was John Hamer and her mother was Maria Mather. Her paternal grandparents were James Hamer and Elena Haslam; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. She had four brothers and five sisters, named James, Eli, William, John, Mary, Martha, Mary, Sarah and Eliza. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
