William was born in 1850 in Salford and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1850 in Manchester.1 2  William's father was John Hamer and his mother was Maria Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Hamer and Elena Haslam; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, Eli, John, Mary, Selina, Martha, Mary, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
