Eli was born in 1847 in Bolton.1  Eli's father was John Hamer and his mother was Maria Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Hamer and Elena Haslam; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, William, John, Mary, Selina, Martha, Mary, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1848 in Bolton.1
