Samuel was born in 1826 in Worsley.1  Samuel's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Jacks. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Henry, Peter and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.

‌Samuel and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on May 14th, 1848 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).3   They had three sons and a daughter, named Peter, Samuel, Thomas and Mary.  There are possibly more children.
