If James was 64 in 1841 (or it could be 60), then he may be the son of John and Betty Mather of Pendleton who had a son James baptised at Eccles 7 June 1749. Otherwise maybe son of Thomas and Ann of Prestwich with James baptised 21 June 1795 (which fits with their first son being Thomas).
