Mary was born in 1827 in Newton and her baptism took place on February 25th, 1827 in Newton Heath.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Edwin, James, Abraham, Samuel, John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth and Catherine.
