Elizabeth was born in July 1824 in Newton and her baptism took place on July 11th, 1824 in Newton Heath.1  Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Edwin, James, Abraham, Samuel, John, Joseph, Ann, Catherine and Mary.  Elizabeth and Catherine were twins.
