James was born in August 1832 in Newton and his baptism took place on August 5th, 1832 in Newton Heath.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Edwin, Abraham, Samuel, John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary.
