Edwin was born in March 1831 in Newton and his baptism took place on March 22nd, 1831 in Newton Heath.1  Edwin's father was James Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Henry, James, Abraham, Samuel, John, Joseph, Ann, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary.  He died at 3 months old in June 1831 in Newton.  He was buried on June 26th, 1831 in Newton Heath.2
