Robert was born in 1836 in Worsley and his baptism took place on June 4th, 1836 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1 2  Robert's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, James, William, Esther, Betty and Susannah. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
