William was born in 1831 in Worsley and his baptism took place on December 18th, 1831 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1 2  William's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, James, Robert, Esther, Betty and Susannah. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
