John was born in 1819 in Worsley and his baptism took place on April 11th, 1819 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1 2  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, James, William, Robert, Esther, Betty and Susannah. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
