Joseph was born in April 1844 in Ancoats and his baptism took place on April 17th, 1844 in Manchester.1 2  Joseph's father was James Mather and his mother was Margaret Stockton (Slater).  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Henry, James, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 49 in January 1894 in Halliwell.  He was buried on January 27th, 1894.3 4
