Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Margaret Stockton (Slater). Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Margaret Dawson. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, Henry, Joseph, James and Ann. She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
