James was born in 1844 in Clifton.1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Dutson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Jacks. He had a brother and a sister, named Samuel and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the three known children.
