James was born in March 1805 in Eccles and his baptism took place there on March 31st, 1805.1  James' father was Ellis (Elias) Mather and his mother was Alice Eccles. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Robert, Elias, Ann, Sarah, Alice, Alice and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
