Alice was born in 1803 in Eccles and her baptism took place there on July 3rd, 1803.1  Alice's father was Ellis (Elias) Mather and her mother was Alice Eccles. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Robert, Elias, James, Ann, Sarah, Alice and Ann.  She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
