Robert was born in 1792 in Barton upon Irwell and his baptism took place on October 21st, 1792 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).1  Robert's father was Ellis (Elias) Mather and his mother was Alice Eccles. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Elias, James, Ann, Sarah, Alice, Alice and Ann.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died as an infant about 1792.
