Mary was born in 1843 in Manchester.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Dodd. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Elizabeth, Hannah and Ann.  She was the second youngest of the six known children.

‌Mary and Frederick were married in a religious ceremony on August 24th, 1863 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).2   The family line is yet to be completed.
