Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Dodd. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Hannah, Mary and Ann. She was the oldest of the six known children.

In 1851, Elizabeth (17) was living at Rooden Lane, Prestwich with her parents (James a Shoe Maker) and family.
22 Nov 1852, Elizabeth Mather (21) of Rooden Lane, daughter of James a Brick Burner married James Dawson (23) of Rooden Lane at Prestwich St Mary.
Between 1853 and 1873 they had 11 children, with all births registered at Prestwich, Bury.
Elizabeth and James were married in a religious ceremony on November 22nd, 1852 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles) witnessed by John Mather & Jane Hosker.2
