Margaret was born in 1870 in Bolton.1  Margaret's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Ellen Pilling.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Margaret Stockton (Slater). She had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the three children.
