John's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, John, William, Elizabeth, Ann, Ellen, Alice, Alice and Alice.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 2 in March 1796 in Manchester.  He was buried on March 24th, 1796 at Manchester Cathedral.¹
