William's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, John, William, Elizabeth, Ann, Ellen, Alice, Alice and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 9 in September 1808 in Manchester.  He was buried on September 25th, 1808 at Manchester Cathedral.²
