John was born in January 1861 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on February 3rd, 1861 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Sarah Simcock.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Alice Ashton. He had a brother and four sisters, named Richard, Mariame, Sarah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the six children.
