Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Sarah Simcock.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Alice Ashton. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Mariame, Sarah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
