Sarah was born in 1866 in Prestwich.1  Sarah's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Sarah Simcock.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Alice Ashton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Mariame, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
